When Yoshimura Sensei left ZC for Hokkaido, I asked, "What now?"

"See Kobun."

I left Zen Center in 1972 for a cabin on Quadra Island, B.C. To make way for the vacationing crowds, I left for the Summers. Once, to Los Altos to sit & paint. Once, to lead a discussion group for a class Kobun taught at Naropa Institute. Once, to Santa Cruz, where Silas, my son, was born. Three times, seeing Kobun.

After delivering a load of peacocks to Green Gulch, I wrote a poem.
When I showed it to Kobun, he said, "I wish I wrote that."
In ways, we both knew he had.T

I'm still trying to see Kobun . . .

as we rush through the Swinging Gate
as if looking for some Purer Land
Who will save all the Wildflowers we step on?
