Suffrage cartoon

“Recipe For Justice” is coming to the Sleeping Lady Chapel Theatre in Leavenworth, Washington for its world premiere! The new Musical Readers Theatre celebrates the 2009-2010 Washington Woman Suffrage Centennial and plays at 2:00 on Mothers Day, May 11. The two-act musical historical drama features three generations of Washington women planning a celebration dinner as the matriarch, mother and two teenagers share songs, recipes, memories, and contrary views over woman suffrage and women’s rights. Other characters in the play are spirits of suffragists, who also serve as a sort of Greek chorus. Susan Butruille directs the production. Anne Conrad directs the singers and live combo.

The script is by Leavenworth author and Readers Theatre director Susan Butruille, with Bellingham musician Linda Allen. Authentic suffrage music and Linda Allen’s songs about food and life and women’s rights weave through the production. The Upper Valley Historical Society, Sleeping Lady Mountain Retreat, Whatcom County Museum, and Women’s History Weavers sponsor the production, with partial funding from the Icicle Fund and the Washington Women’s History Consortium, a part of the Washington State Historical Society.

Cast members are: Carolyn Giger, Becky Fishburn, Nellie Fishburn, and Annie Rowe. Spirits are: Anita Hamilton, Denise deRocher, Barbara Sorensen, and Susan Butruille.

Ticket prices are $15 adult, $12 seniors, and a special price for students of $7. Please, no children under age 6. Tickets are available through the Chamber of Commerce and the Upper Valley Museum of Leavenworth.
