Hi,

My name is William Young
RM3 aboard the USS Sproston, DDE577, 1951.

During the blast my battle station was on the bridge so I had a chance to witness all of the blasts.

The USS Sproston and the USS Walker (DDE517) were ASW (Antisubmarine warfare). As I remember, our duties were to run a submarine screen around the atoll to make sure there were no subs in the area. Our home port was the sub base at Pearl..

I am now 72 years old and don't seem to have any ill effects from the blasts. I live in El Cerrito, Ca and I am still gainfully employed as a Supplier Quality Engineer.

If anybody out there remembers the destroyers operating in the area I would like to hear from you.

By the way, we escorted the USS Curtiss from San Diego to the Marshall Islands.

Best regards to all.
