I was on the Badoeng Strait from
March 1955 until we de-commissioned her in Bremerton May 1957.
I got to witness 4 or 5 of the shots from the flight deck, and a couple in
CIC while on radar watch. From either location it was awesome to behold.
I remember swimming in the lagoons and playing softball on the islands after a
shot. Beer and hot dogs. I didn't know then that doing those things could
be dangerous to one's health.
The VIPs must not have known any better either. I recall sharing a beer on
an island with the Admiral's Chief of Staff.
Duffy's at Eniwetok was a special place---it had walls and a roof. And an
outdoors movie screen!
Sailors on the Badoeng Strait (and others, I suppose) lost most of their
grace and manners while in the Pacific Proving Grounds---some embarassing
moments when we returned to civilization at Pearl.
The carrier's call sign was KNEEHIGH----she was a grand old lady.
