My name is Danny Wilson. I live in Greenbrier Arkansas. I was aboard the USS Henry County LST 824, (Henry the Hawk) during operation Dominic. I found your web site today while looking for pictures of Johnson Island. I don't remember a lot of the dates and times of the tests but the stories of two of my shipmates brought back memories of the operation.
I was aboard the USS Henry County for almost 4 years, from late 1960 to 1964. I was gunners mate. My GQ station was the aft twin gun mount. I remember after each test we were checked by the geiger counter team. I remember we had to wear 2 or 3 film badges at all times. I always wondered what the reading was on the film badges.
Like I said I don't remember a lot of dates and details about the tests but I was happy to find that someone remembers the guinea pigs of Operation Dominic. That is what I felt like, a guinea pig. I was pleased to find your web site and the stories of my fellow guinea pigs.
I was diagnosed with bladder cancer on September 27 and had surgery on the 29th. I have to be checked every 3 months now for any reoccurrence. That is the only health problem that I have ever had.
Thank you for letting me add my 2 cents worth.
