I was aboard the fleet tug USS Apache ATF 67 during Operation Castle, being a Radioman my station was inside the ship.

My most vivid memory was the violence of the shock waves after detonation, and then the salt water spraying of the ship to rid it of contamination, also the way the sea looked after detonation. The sea had a chalky, milky, simmering kind of appearance, especially one of the detonations that was close to an atoll, we went in pretty soon after the shot and that scene always stuck in my mind, kind of like the sea was boiling.

I developed skin cancer in mid-life, and always wondered if it could be contributed to Operation Castle.
