Dear Keith:

I too served on the USS Oakhill LSD-7 during Operation Ivy. I was a Radioman and was instructed to count down the bomb and give instructions to the crewmen on our ship. I would have to just repeat what Bernard Hausch said in his email. The Oakhill was also ordered into the lagoon to look for the downed airplane. We had a sprinkler system on the ship that was supposed to wash away any fallout as we cruised into the lagoon.

It was an enormous experience for a few moments but life swinging on the hook all those months was tedious. We have had four reunions since 1996 and have about 300 names of men who served on the Oakhill. We are still looking for more as we would like to know what happened to all of those atomic veterans.
