Story # 1
GW (George Wilson) and I found out that there was dog food on the island, led over from the Japanese...it was in the Army warehouse. It was getting difficult to take enough food from the mess hall to feed them after the pups arrived. We went to the Army supply people, but they could only give us that through regular procedure. ..filling out a requisition form, etc. The food was not on their manuals, and could not be requisitioned. So they sat with all this food, and no one could have it....GW decided there was a better way. Their warehouse was nothing more than a cloth covered quansit shaped building...l don't remember how we knew which building it was in, but we took the weapons carrier in the middle of the night, loaded it up with plenty of cans, and left. The problem was where to put it...we woke up a few people, and spent the night burying it in the sand and beneath the boardwalk. There was some minor investigation, but no evidence could be found. Please don't use the word "stole". I remember George referring to it as a "Midnight requisition" I like to think of it as God's Work.
By the way, the Army supply Sarge was a guy named Sal and he was from Brooklyn. We did further business...he got in a supply of the new AF Blue blankets, and I really wanted one...we traded...l gave him a field jacket for it...really needed that blanket at Eniwetok!!! He was the guy who wanted to know how come I signed that huge alarm clock out for one night after George heaved it a country mile!!!
Story # 2
When we went on midnight shift, we would start the engine and wait for the dogs to climb aboard. After the pups got older, we would take out our anger with the Army by pulling away before they got on board...5,6, or 7 (?) dogs following us barking their heads off right past where they were sleeping.
You wanted a paragraph or two, so this is more than enough. I have more dog stories, but these were the highlights.
STAY WELL, BE HAPPY
