A Punters Dream
. . . by Harry E. Blackford

The sport of kings, my infatuation
my best loved sport in all creation
of which I need no familiarization.

So as usual and with anticipation
I did a lengthy computation
looking for a steady continuation
based on past demonstration
and allowing for any perturbation
. I did a complete and total examination
firmed up my entire summation
then discarded it all for inside information.
The steeds name was "Suppuration"
a 6 year old maiden, a real aberration
I bet my last Grant in desperation
at 99 to 1.

Long shots I shun, there is no relation
I consider them not in my prognostication
for I've always had some reservation
and considered it wild speculation
to wager without solid qualification
but eight losses in a row - what agitation.
I feel the need for another libation.

Then off to the paddock for an examination
to see if "old Supp" was some sort of mutation
though his eyes showed some dilation
I saw no pigmentation
no bulging muscles, no indentation
that would cause further speculation
into his parents copulation.

"Supp" paraded to the track in formation
eventually went to his assigned station
and they're off- purse elation.
Around the track - just one rotation
old "Supp" ran with determination
as if he knew with trepidation
to lose meant extermination
and for me, more deprivation.
His body extended in full flexation
he would not submit to subjugation
by his jock, Lorena Castration.
So on he flew with one fixation
to precede all others in formation.
By a nose he won in regulation
then fell to the track - asphyxiation.
I think he deserves a big citation.
But wait, another claimed intimidation
a foul by "Supp", a protestation.
Oh! What frustration
not to mention irritation
while the stewards held an investigation
into the entire situation.
Damnation !
Then after due consideration
they gave "Supp" exoneration.

What a wonderful joyful sensation
complete and total jubilation
my heart can't stand the palpitation.
I think I need a long vacation.
Ten grand I win, intoxication
my heart slows down to relaxation
as I bask in my pals adulation
trying to show sophistication.

Then alas! I remembered taxation
supposedly to support our nation.
Don't ask my exact quotation
when I collected smaller compensation
instead of maximization.
So after I pay off my obligation
I'll again be exposed to privation
and attempt to avoid starvation
until tomorrow's races.
