SEARCHING FOR PERSONAL HISTORY
My interest in looking for men who served in the Pacific Proving Grounds is somewhat selfish, in that, I am looking for people to interview to help define a point in history.
That time and place in history is not a simple straightforward subject. It's not a paragraph or a chapter. Not even a book. Those times were different and special. Not enough has been written or recorded and those of us who lived then, and there, are fading away. Some stories need telling. In just a few years, all of us who were witnesses to the atomic explosions will be gone and there will only be film and video. The flash, the HEAT, the trembling ground, and that visible shock wave's approach, can not be recorded properly on film.
I want The Wetokian web site to grow to include the eyewitness stories of the men. Most will not write about it yet. They easily tell of dogs and fishing, They talk about ordinary happenings and daily island adventures. I hope these little stories will break the ice and they will finally start to tell their thoughts and feelings when they were confronted with THAT VIEW of atomic power.
Biographies
We have a standing invitation for those in the group to write about what happened to them after Wetok. This invitation is now extended to all Wetok Veterans.
Editors Note: I carried a picture of Don in my mind for 45 years. He took me to the barracks when I landed at Wetok. Handlebars ridiculously long, curled, and dressed down with the shellac they used in the hanger to fasten decals. The windshield of the truck was missing and those attachments vibrated in the wind like antennas. Admired him very much then and now.
We are fading fast. Swap some tales with each other by sending them to me. We share a time, history and place. Each of you has a particular point of view ------ VIEWPOINTS & BIOGRAPHIES Give me yours. ~ Harold Wainscott
