Hi Keith

I was aboard the USS James E Kyes during Operation Redwing. I was a Metalsmith 3rd class. We were assigned to keep the washdown system on the ship in working order and stand secutity watch, beside our usual work duties.

Just 1 time did we have to use the wash down system. We would moniter the ship (also 1 of my duties) with geiger counters. I saw all the detonations in Operation Redwing, it was something to see, they were all detonated early mormings before daylight. The detonations would turn night into daylight for a short period of time. The mushrooms would be different colors. We were issued glasses to watch them. If we didn't have them on, we had to turn our back toward the detonation till they announced on loud speakers, it was alright to look.

I spent the years 1956 & 1957 aboard the USS Kyes then got transferred to the USS Hamel for 3 months, then I was transferred to the USS Frontier till I was discharged in july 1958.

Thanks again

Ray Viator
