Christmas Airport
Christmas Island Airport Terminal

It's small and crude, but from this terminal building you can get a rough idea of the structure of all our buildings on the island. The signs read as follows:

Welcome To
CHRISTMAS ISLAND
ELEVATION 5 FT.
119 MILES NORTH OF EQUATOR

There is another sign less visible hanging to the left of the above sign which reads : MATS PASSENGER SERVICE
P.S. MATS=Military Air Transportation Service

Aviator Bill Vaughn
The aircraft is an AD-4 Skyraider, by Douglas Aircraft Corp., the "A" is for attack; the "D" is for Douglas; and the "4" means the fourth modification, or mod., of this aircraft which doesn't change its outward appearance.

The atomic drop was one of the early drops, probably made in May of '62. That's the best I can place this picture. And, I may be wrong about the time this picture was taken...but it's around May.
