Keith.

I was a Marine Guard stationed aboard the USS Curtiss (AV-4) during the 1948 tests at Eniwetok.

As a passing, note I was stationed on Eniwetok for about five months in 1947. We were told the island was to be abandoned and I was sent to Kwajalein(?) and then back to Pearl Harbor. In early 1948 some of us were detached and sent San Pedro where we were assigned to JTF- 7.

When we abandonded Eniwetok in 1947 we dumped many dollars worth of equipment into the lagoon.

I lost about 20 pounds aboard the Curtiss; we stood 4 on 8 off 4 on 12 off for three straight days then 24 hours off. Then the whole cycle was repeated.

It was quite an experience. I was able to observe two of the three tests. Awesome.
