Keith,

I served as a Disbursing Clerk Third Class, so I was not connected in any way with the H bomb preparation. My only experience was on the day of detonation.

We were assembled on the side of the ship which faced the experiment. As with many people, there had been several stories of what might happen, therefore there was some anxiety. Needless to say, it was an excitement to witness. The sound was loud, the heat was immense, and the mushroom cloud was huge.

It was supposed to be such a big secret, but I was asked by a taxi driver on my first liberty about the H-bomb, of which I told him I did not know anything. No doubt some other people were not as tight lipped.
