Nevada Test Site 1951
Operation Ranger was the detonation of 5 airdropped atomic explosives during the spring of 1951. The first four detonations were very small on the atomic scale, but still many hundreds of times larger than any other explosive device used in war. Perhaps this was the prefered method to introduce Nevadians to the new idea of atomic testing at the Nevada Proving Grounds.
