Governor Kitzhaber Issues Proclaimation

Atomic Veterans Day in Oregon
July 16, 2001
A couple of weeks ago, Operation Hardtack veteran Forrest Bahler who lives in Dallas, Oregon, notified me that he had made contact with the governor's office about the issuance of a proclamation for Atomic Veterans Day on July 16. The governor's office responded requesting a draft of the requested proclamation.

The draft was written up and submitted to Governor John Kitzhaber for approval. Forrest Bahler was contacted by the governor's office and told that the proclamation has been approved and the documents were received in the mail. A full text of the proclamation can be read by clicking on the image to the right.

The process of requesting a proclamation from the governor for Atomic Veterans Day was straight forward and surprisingly quick to be approved. If we did it, you can do it. Last year, Operation Teapot Veteran Terry Brady in Alaska ask his governor to sign such a proclamation. I encourage atomic veterans from every state to contact their NAAV commander and request an Atomic Veterans Day Proclamation from the governor's office. Not only do atomic veterans gain the official recognition from their state, but copies of this document can accompany press releases when seeking publicity for meetings or events. It could possibly be displayed at VA facilities and at other veteran organizations meeting places. --Keith Whittle
