The Unauthorized Investgation.

There was still more to the meeting, but now I had been presented with a second mystery, unauthorized investigations. By now the NRDL was more than a collection of initials. Its a consequence I queried the DNA to ask how many former NRDL personnel who were at GREENHOUSE were in their data bank. The response was twenty-one On January 1, I wrote letters to these anonymous men, quoting some of the data contained herein, put them in a stamped unsealed envelope which bore my return address and forwarded them to the DNA. In turn, the agency placed a disclaimer in each advising the addressee that they were under no obligation to answer my query. This done they were finally put in the mail.

While I waited for the postman, my thoughts turned to what I had already learned about Shot Item, and in the pursuit of refreshing my memory I obtained a document that revealed a fifth shot - FREDDY- had been approved for testing at GH.34 While no reason was given for it not being detonated, it is plausible to conjecture that one reason was the fallout situation resulting from shots Dog and Item. This proposition is supported by the following official DNA statement:

" The recent analysis does confirm that all personnel living on those three islands (Japtan, Parry, Eniwetok) of Eniwetok Atoll through the entire test series probably exceeded the taskforce's maximum permissible exposure (MPE) due to fallout alone. Any additional exposure on missions would add to this overexposure. "35

The potential for serious internal human contamination, already grave from Dog Shot fallout, was even greater as a result of Item. General Cooney reports the following scenario:

"At approximately Item plus 3 hours and 20 minutes the gamma intensity recorder at the radiological safety building, Parry, showed a sharp rise followed by a drop to nearly the original reading. This 'spike' was interpreted as the result of the passage overhead of an active cloud from which little material fell out. Several other spikes of activity appeared during the next few minutes followed by a steady rise in activity due to fall-out, until about Item plus 4 hours and 45 minutes. Fallout started again at Item plus 8 hours and continued until Item plus 13 hours and 45 minutes. From Item plus 16 hours the activity decayed recording to a t-1.2 law."36
