Hello Atomic Veterans! My name is Mary Newman and I am a Veterans Service Officer, for Douglas County, Oregon.
My father was CPO Stanley Senk, Navy, Ret. He was at Operations Crossroads and downwind of Operation Sandstone at Kwajalein Naval Air Station. After Crossroads he was flown by PBY to the USS Chilton, one of the target ships, to repair communications equipment and spent a day on board. During Sandstone he worked in the radio shack on Kwajalein. The drones and B-29 were parked outside the radio shack before and after the drops -- more radioactivity. Radioactive target ships were towed to the island and anchored in the lagoon until they were disposed of by sinking them in the Pacific. The men swam and bathed in the lagoon, and they derived their drinking water from it as well.
My father later developed malignant (squamous cell carcinoma) and non-malignant cysts, including a pilonidal cyst at age 37 which normally develops before age 25. He had sigmoid (Duke’s B) adenocarcinoma, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia plus lung cancer.
I am a strong advocate for all veterans and I know from personal experience how poorly atomic veterans have been treated by the VA. I am familiar with VA claims processes, the forms and the addresses you need. I also strongly advocate for veterans to apply for the entitlements which they EARNED. I will be happy to try to answer any questions you atomic veterans (and all veterans) may ask. I will try to answer you by email as soon as possible.
