NAAV Data Base

A Message from the Medical Data Base Custodian:

For seventeen years National Association of Atomic Veterans has sought medical and financial assistance for the veterans and widows of veterans who were exposed to varying levels of ionizing radiation during the testing of Atomic and Nuclear weapons in the atmosphere from 1945 through 1962.

In the spring of 1992 the NAAV Board of Directors reconized the need for the establishment of the Medial Histories of Atomic Veterans, their widows, and their children. Since the establishment of the Computerized Medical Data Base, information on over 5000 Veterans has been collected and processed.

To illustrate what we are finding, the present data indicates a cancer death rate for American Atomic Veterans of over 78% and an average age at death of 56 years. So that you know we are not alone, research by British Atomic Veterans reveals a cancer death rate of 91% (percent) and an average age at death of 51 years; research by Australian Atomic Veterans indicates the cancer death rate is 81% with an average age at death of 53 years.

This effort is vital to all Atomic Veterans and their widows if NAAV is to continue to seek assistance and benefits for Atomic Veterans. When our work is reviewed by government agencies and independent scientists, we must be able to show documented records. Word of mouth illness and death reports are not acceptable. Presently, data is being furnished to various members of Congress, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the National Academy of Sciences.

We are asking that you complete the Medical Survey Form as accurately as possible. In the case of widows we are asking that they attach a photocopy of their husband's Death Certificate.

The information you furnish maybe helpful for you but is very vital to all Atomic veterans in their struggle for ..."Simple Justice"...!

Sincerely,

Boley H. Caldwell III
Former NAAV Data Base Custodian
