I was an AT1 - radar operator and ect. with VP 872 recalled to active
service during the Cuban Crisis. I was there at Christmas Island for the
duration of 23 of the atomic blasts, also was at Johnson during the
first failure of the I thought Atlas launch which they destroyed about a
quarter mile over our heads. We were berth on a barge just off the
beach, and remember parts of the rocket hitting the deck and what a neat
feeling that was.
My plane commander was Lt. Miller. Could tell lots
of good stories about myself as well as the naval war games off Long
Beach we participated in. We won. He took our aircraft - after
launching two torp.'s in the side of the carrier - up and thru the
landing flight pattern over the deck - cleared it by 50 feet or less.
Also remember a rocket exercise on an Island out of San Francisco, he
took our P2V7 into a stall before diving at full military power to
discharge our rockets at the rock. I had a wonderful experience in the
service. No regrets and a lot of memories.
Murph!
