Hello Keith:

USS Bottineau APA-235 About the USS Bottineau APA-235. (The Bottineau was named after a town in North Dakota). We arrived at Bikini Atoll on June 6, l946 where we acted as a transport for the target vessel boarding teams during Operations Crossroads, approximately 2000 Marines.
Crossroads Card As Ship Cook 3/c my duties were butcher in charge of the meat locker. During the test we were on deck crouched down beside the bulkhead rail when the word came that we could look at the blast. I did not see any Gieger counters any where.

As far as radiation exposure : we drank the water, bathed in it, breathed the air and fallout. I do not know if 0.240 Gamma (Rem) is high or low. I've gone to the V.A. hospital for quite a few years but so far no sign of cancer. I have other minor problems but none are life threatening. Just what any old sailor of 71 years would have.

I have tried to find other shipmates but have not been successful.

You asked about the U.S.S.Carlson DE9: , the ship was named after Daniel William Carlson, Chief Machinist, after he lost his life on June 6, l942 when his ship the USS Hammann was torpedoed in the vicinity of Midway Island. The Carlson did extensive escort duties throughout the Pacific in 1944-45 at which time I was aboard. We arrived April 1, l945 off Okinawa in the morning with a convoy of assult ships. We were in task group 30.8 and 38 during the campaign. My duties at that time were as a baker.

I now live in Minnesota.
