I spent 13 months on Eniwetok from June 1955 to July 1956. I was a teletype
operator and worked shift work in the commcenter. I was there through 17 atomic
tests. Sometimes we were called out in formation to witness tests.
Sometimes we did not even know when they were going on. I wore a film badge
and recorded 2940 milliroegens of radiation. I have a document from the government
verifying this.
In 1986 I was diagnosed with guilliam barre' syndrome. I
was totally paralyzed from the sternum down. I took physical therapy for 2
years, worked out in a swimming pool, and with weights and approximately 8
years later recovered the ability to ambulate without any assistance. I
still suffer with right hip pain, can't sleep nights and walking is limited. I don't have a lot of stamina. I have an internist and a neuroligist that gave me a
letter stating radiation exposure could have caused guilliam barre'. So far
the VA denied me a disability. When I go to the VA I can never get a doctor,
I only get PA's.
Some names I can remember I served with are Phil Macri,
James Rodgers, a guy named Mackey, a Sam from Dayton Ohio and a career
soldier named Fountain.
Any help would be appreciated.
