I am a Veteran of two nuclear tests one in 1948 and one in 1951 and in all the information I have seen the Operation Sandstone has not been mentioned. I have a book published by the Infantry Journal Press, 1115 17th Street NW, Washington 6, D.C. , published in 1949. On page (96) is a picture taken with the flash of an exploding atomic weapon. As you can see from this picture most of the crew have on dark goggles on the rest of us turned our backs to the blast and placed our arms over our eyes. Even with this heat was felt and a red glow was seen.

I was also at Operation Greenhouse, in 1951. This time we were not aloud topside but was at GQ, and the ship was washed down after each blast. I am now 70 years old and do not have any adverse affects from this, but why am I apparently healthy while others have been affected. I was aboard the USS Curtiss (AV-4) for both Operation Sandstone and Operation Greenhouse.
