I don't remember hearing what the doseometer reading was. I wouldn't know
what it meant if they had told me.
I have cancer on both sides of my family so every day I wake up is a great
accomplishment. I have not been diagnosed with any thing except low
thyroid (I take medication), high cholesterol (I take medication), lower back pain,
(I take medication), tinitus (ringing ears) but otherwise I seem to be in
good health for an overweight man of 62.
This year I did take part in a cancer study conducted by the University
California Irvine. I told them about my exposure in the Navy and one nurse thought they might want to do further studies because of that. I heard nothing more about it.
She also stated that half of my buddies had already died of cancer. I
don't know how she had knowledge that or if she was making a wise crack. Since she was a professional dealing with a client I will assume she was serious.
They told me results of the testing program would be compiled and mailed to
me some time in mid 2000. It was quite an extensive test.
I was contacted randomly by telephone to participate.
I have not been in contact with any of my shipmates over the years. I have
read and heard of concerns about those who were involved in the Pacific tests
but have never done anything about. (In denial, perhaps)
I hope this helps.
