I was an Airman First Class and was on
Eniwetok most of the time. I did get over to Parry Island a few times by
H19 Chopper. I worked in the vehicle and ground power maintenance
section and scheduled maintenance and repairs. I was present for all the
tests We would sit on the beach facing the blast area. We were issued
thick glasses that fit over your face like a skin divers mask, not
letting in any side light. From total black to bright light 40K to 50K
feet high in a flash. It can't be described - you had to be there. I
also remember the blast where the "wind changed" and we were told to
stay inside to avoid the fallout. I don't recall any particular clean up
effort.
I do have a booklet that I was given while on the island and there are a
number of pictures. If there is any interest I could scan these and send
them to you.
When I joined the Air Force I lived in California but have lived in
Beaverton, Oregon for many years now.
I'm glad I found this page, Glenn Griffeth
