All living and working spaces, decks, clothes and shoes gave no readings. The salt water lines. evaporators, condensers, etc., showed residual contamination. The urinals showed increased background count. The outside hull and anchor chain gave moderate beta readings., one fender was badly contaminated.
3. RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE COMMANDING OFFICER.
(1)Treatment of evaporators by use of starch boiler compound, cold shock, or acid process for removal of scales, as outlined in DSM directive EN28/A2-11 of 2 August, 1946 is required.
(2) Place the designated contaminated lines and fender in the contaminated small boat to be sunk.
(3) All urinals and troughs in heads should be scrubbed, using some abrasive material or acid.
(4) The Following small boat is considered hazardous and has been recommended for sinking: Hull #16210, engine #DA6807.
(5) Allow no welding, burning, brushing, shipping, dry scraping or machining on salt water lines or salt water exposed parts. Avoid all contact with scale or dust from these parts. If this materal must by handled take utmost precautions to prevent possible inhalation or ingestion of these particles. Some suggested precautions are: wet technique, expendable gloves, a safe discard procedure at sea, pressure masks, etc, This type of work should only be done with monitering supervision except in case of emergency. A moniter may be contacted through the District Medical Office, 12th Naval District.
CLEARANCE:
