Operation Redwing 1956
US Atomic Veterans
Richard Flory
Richard Flory sent an email to the Portland, Oregon Atomic Veterans web site as a veteran of Operation Redwing.
Confirming what others have reported. I was on USS Navasota AO 106.
Everyone not on watch was on main deck prior to sunrise, sitting facing
away from site of test. Not sure, but think it was the first of the
series. At time of blast the sky became brilliant. It seemed even
brighter than daylight. When I turned to look, at first there was only a
cloudy area below the clouds. Then as I watched a huge column appeared
above the cloud which continued to climb for many seconds while the
mushroom developed. Other tests went on but none as awesome as that
first one.
The Navasota was my first duty station. I was an Ensign in
the deck department and had only been on the ship a few months. I
believe we were inside the atoll for another of the shots. We all wore
dosimeters and they were sent off to be read. My dosage for the entire
time we were there was about 70mr if I remember correctly.
