I was aboard the USS BADOENG STRAITS CVE-116 during OPERATION REDWING in the OR Division as a RD-3. I often ran guardmail to NAN ISLAND first thing in the morning after the "shots". I wore a film badge and there was no indication at any time that I had been exposed to excessive levels of radiation.

I observed the "shots" from either the flight deck or at my duty station on one of the station keeping radars in the Combat Information Center. It was interesting to see a "target" disappear after the "shot".

Observing from the flight deck gave a spectacular display of colors as the mushroom climbed into the heavens. The shock wave {speed of sound} could be seen coming across the water til it reached you. As it passed it seemed as though giant hands had pushed gently on your body.
