Subject: Radiation Exposure
Date: Tue, 14 Aug 2001
I served with the 84th Engineer Battalion at Camp Desert Rock, Nevada in 1957. I have had several bouts with Basil Cell Carcinoma over the years since. I've tried on numerous occasions to get compensated from the VA and have always been rejected. I am now 68 years of age and have no other known cancer problems except for BCC.
My radiation exposure came about while I was stationed in Camp Desert Rock,
Nevada with "B" Company, 84th Engineer Battalion in May through August 1957.
I don't recall the number of blasts during that time, but I remember there
were several during that short period of time. Most were tower detonations,
but I do remember there was one aerial and am not sure if it was dropped or
was a balloon test. I have a copy of my old radiation exposure dosage
record, but we both know they were using Xray technician film badges back in
those days and which were incapable of measuring ionization readings.
Over the years I have had a few operations to remove basil cell carcinoma
areas from my face, chest and arms. I tried to claim compensation from the
VA, but was refused each and every time. Over in Germany during one of my
VA directed physicals and German Doctor stated to me that my problem could
very well be associated with my radiation exposure but that didn't help me
either. Dealing with the VA as you know can be
pretty frustrating.
Back in the 70's I was a member of the "Atomic Veterans Association" in
California and dropped out when I returned to Germany to work for the
Government. So Keith that is my story. I'm in pretty good shape when
compared to some of the Air Force and Navy Veterans I've seen. Some of whom
have passed away since I last saw them.
Take care and thanks for your interest.
