Operation Castle, 1954

PC 1546

Rongelap Dinghy
A few weeks before the first detonation of Operation Castle, the PC 1546 toured the Marshall Islands. These pictures are from an 8mm film shot by Bob Carlomagno.
PC 1546 sailors man their large boat to go ashore, but the motor wouldn't run. Here they are launching the Captain's Dinghy as a replacement.

With several sailors in the dinghy the shore party is on their way to Rongelap.

Keith, The boat being loaded and unloaded from PC1546 was too big for our ship and it took a lot to get it in the water. The first time we launched it the motor wouldn't start so we lowered the Captains dinghy and rowed ashore in that. The captains name was Garlinghouse and he wasn't well liked. He was a Lieutenant and a former admirals aide who I don't think had any sea duty. I guess he was supposed to get his experience at our expense. I still wonder about the natives on Rongerik and why they weren't evacuated. Everyone seems to ignore that part. Leaving the freezer doors open so no one would eat contaminated food is not what I would call a great humanitarian act.
