Rep. Frost, Martin - 3-25-99
The above are the original co-sponsors. We must contact all members of the
House of Representatives and request they co-sponsor H.R. 1286. For
residents of Arizona, my information is that Bob Stump is the hold-out. WORK
ON HIM.
In addition, a new wrinkle has developed: Rep. Christopher Smith of New
Jersey has re-introduced a bill (which has been introduced for the past
approximately 8 years, every year, for the introduction of bronchio-alveolar
cancer only.) It is a form of lung cancer; however, it is known as the
"non-smokers' cancer" which may or may not be the case. However, my
information is that Bob Stump, Ariz Republican, is pushing Smith's bill over
that of Lane Evans. I do not have the number for Smith's bill, but it should
not be hard to find -- call your Rep. Bronchio-alveolar is a very rare type of
lung cancer and would not be considered as "lung cancer" per se in Smith's
bill, only that particular type. It would, however, be included as a
"lung cancer" in Evans' bill.
He (Smith) had a constituent, (no longer a
resident of N.J.) who has been influential in this decision. I know her, and
I've tried over the years to work with her for the inclusion of all lung
cancers, which she refuses to do. This is a case of pure selfishness on her
part and it really has p..... me off over the years. Oh, well, what I'm
trying to say, I guess is to redouble your efforts with your Reps. to
co-sponsor Lane Evans bill--not Christopher Smith's. The reasoning behind
this hare-brained idea is that the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has
said it would be too costly to implement Evans' bill, but that Smith's bill
(for a very rare type of cancer), would be doable. They were asked to
consider then, the three cancers which were finally boiled down to in
Wellstone's bill, i.e., lung, colon, and brain and CNS tumors. No luck. I
have been unable to contact Wellstone's office as the Senate has been out but
will be back this week.
Later--
I still have not been able to get the address for the Cold War
Certificate. Will keep trying.
