I served on Eniwetok from Jan 1952-Jan 1953. Served in the military pay section of the joint finance office. I believe under a Capt. Sokolosky? and a Lt. Collins.

I was at both shots. Out to sea for the big one. We were told about 35 miles. Quite a sight, plus the sound and shock wave. For the air drop we were on the ground, lucky us, when the blast occurred. Heard the bomb away, then the wait. Too young and stupid to know we were in harms way. Had the glasses on, etc. This was more frightening then the H bomb, lots of muttering about miss timing and the bomb dropping lower before exploding.

I am looking up old records, etc., to see what I can dig up from 48 years ago. I'm not sure what all I have as a lot was in my mothers records which I am sifting through.

I do have some photos, one especially taken Nov 52 showing all the personnel of the army finance office. That photo I am sorry to say doesn't have names attached. I am 2nd from left, middle row. The only other name I'm sure of is Lt Collins, bottom row, 2nd from right.

I have been racking my memory for most any thing I could think of. Not doing too good.

I did come up with my pay scale at that time.

Monthly pay for a Sgt.......$145.23
Foreign svc pay..........................16.00
clothing allowance........................4.20
less income tax...........................21.30
total net......................................144.44

Also must have had a bad storm that month (Sept) as I had complained about the rains and some of our tents washing away.

I have a Japtan Island 25 cent note, used for trade, not sure where. It says on it recreation paradise of the Pacific...I might try to clean it up and send it to you.

I have an engraved Zippo lighter, showing the atoll, and naming some islands and my name but not much else.

I am looking at a letter of commendation from Lt. Collins, finance officer. I wonder if there is any significance to the address.

I hope some of this helps.
