James Blish sent email about his duty at Operation Dominic

My name is James G Blish, I was a participant in the atomic tests at Christmas Island in 1962 as a Fireman on the USS CABILDO LSD-16. We set the targets for the tests and sank the ones that were not destroyed by the blasts. We also removed the natives from the island before the tests and set up a movie theater in the Well Deck for them. For some it was to late, they had lost their vision while watching the blasts.

Thank you

natives
Here is the pic of the natives from Christmas Island in 1962, the movie screen isn't set up for them yet. Yes, its true on the natives frying their retinas from watching the blasts and that was when we were directed to remove them before each test, we set up a movie theater in the Well Deck to keep them occupied during the tests.

target
Here is one of the targets we set out for the nuclear tests. They were loaded with instruments and consisted of 15 separate compartments.
