I was aboard the USS Rowan, DD782, from 4/62 to 10/62 and was part of Joint Task Force 8. Our duty was to patrol the area around Christmas Island for Operation Dominic.

During one of the bomb drops we were equipped with monitoring equipment. We had our fantail to the blast. As soon as the bomb was detonated we turned 180 deg. and sailed under the atomic cloud, (ground zero).

I recently found my sea bag in the attic and quess what I found in the bottom of the bag? I found the film badge we had to wear while we were part of Operation Dominic. We were told that the badges would be tested after the bomb testing was over. I quess they forgot to collect the film badges for evulaution.
