I was at the Herrang Dance Camp for the middle two weeks in 2002 and had a fantastic time. The people were great, the teachers were great, I had some great classes, and my second week there I even had hot showers. The mosquitos got really annoying after awhile, but they did provide many conversation openers with strangers since nearly everyone was complaining about them (a few lucky people didn't seem to get bitten much at all).
My first week there (week 29) I stayed in the Pavillion (aka the ghetto) in the same room as last time I was there in 2000. Since then they've added bunk beds (somewhat rickety bunk beds, but still bunk beds) so I wasn't on the floor in the corner this time. The second week, I shared the basement in a house with Kavita which meant quiet, room to spread out, and most importantly hot showers. I think I appreciated the private accomodations even more as a contrast from the week before (when I listened for screams coming out of the showers to tell where on the range from frigid to almost warm to expect the water to be.)
Week 29 I went to all but 3 of my classes (and only skipped those because 20's Charleston hurts my left knee too much). I think my favorite classes were with Bruno & Veronique, a French couple I hadn't seen before. I think it had something to do with their energy infecting the classes in a very good way. Week 30 I started skipping more due to some weird ankle/lower leg pain (which did finally go away and I'm still not sure what caused it). I made sure not to (intentionally at least) skip any of Janice & Manu's classes or Steven's jazz classes, both of which kicked my ass, but in a very good way. My private with Janice was also a very humbling experience, but left me with a lot of good things to work on.
I wish I'd had an opportunity to do more boogie woogie week 29, but just didn't quite manage it. Hopefully next year (assuming I make it back, which there's a strong probability of) I can do more, and spend more time with all of the people I got to know this year, many of whom I missed getting pictures of for some reason.
