SMOKY DETONATION

NEVADA TEST SITE

Shot Smoky, about which there was some advance concern, was detonated atop a 700 steel tower in August. It was rated "a very important one - development wise." The reason Smoky lived up to its name was that 60 tons of coal was placed at the 100-foot level of the tower, and large amounts of lead and paraffin were loaded into the cab at the apex of the tower. All were vaporized. It was a Livermore Laboratory shot. Over 2,000 Canadian and American troops maneuvered through the area in a test of the army's new pentomic battle formations.
