Our Peace Corps training was held in the village of Hamdallaye, 35 km east of Niger's capital, Niamey. Thirty-eight of us spent twelve very intense weeks learning the skills we would need for our work in the villages. The most important of these was language training, which was carried out in small huts like this one. We got very individual attention; in my Hausa classes there were two students and one Nigerien teacher.
