Village Leaders

This millet-stalk hangar in the middle of the village is one of the central gathering places for men in the late afternoon. They call it the wurin latizane, or place of the wise men. They sit down after returning from the fields to tell stories before the evening call-to-prayer. I would often join them, and they would ask me questions about America, such as "All you Americans know how to build rockets, right?" On this occasion we had just completed a village meeting regarding one of my projects. I always invited everyone, but the only people to show up were usually the oldest males from the most important families.
