Millet at Dusk

Most of the people in Lawai Kaoura Alassane are subsistence farmers. The principal crop is millet, a grain similar to corn which grows well in the arid conditions of the Sahelian region. (In the Konni area the average annual rainfall is about 325 mm, or 12 inches.) The rainy season generally runs from June to September. For the other eight months of the year clouds are a very rare sight. This photo was taken just before the harvest in August.
