Home for Two Years

One day toward the end of rainy season I climbed up to the roof of my house to take this picture of my front yard (concession in French). Like everyone else in the village, I lived within a mud wall, which was surrounded by a larger mud wall. I shared the larger concession with two teacher's families. Before you ask, that's a mosquito net hanging over my bed. I slept outside every night for all but the three coldest months of the year (December, January, and February). The rest of the time I would only move my mattress back inside if it started to rain, which happened once or twice a week during the four-month rainy season. The inside of my mud house was way too hot at night, and I liked going to sleep under the stars.
