Trout

There are many trout of the genus Salmo in the Northwest all closely related and difficult to distinguish. Conveniently they have been lumped into 3 categories, Rainbow, Cutthroat and Steelhead. (See Steelhead.) Add to this Kokanee, Char like the Western Bull Trout and Mackinaw, Exotics like Eastern Brook Trout and German Brown Trout and it means tremendous trout fishing for Northwest anglers.

Rainbow (Named for their iridescent red side):

Location: Coastal rivers, lakes and their tributaries. Inland rivers, lakes and Cascade Lakes in Oregon and Washington.

Appearance: Silver to Bronze with light to dark red side.

Size: Large fish up to 14 pounds.

Tackle: Flies, Spinners, Baits, Spoons and Plugs. (See TACKLE BOX).

Season: Year round with seasonal closures in certain areas.

Cutthroat (Named for the red to orange marks under their dentary bones):

Location: Coastal rivers, lakes and their tributaries. Inland rivers, lakes and Cascade Lakes in Oregon and Washington.

Appearance: Silver to Bronze with red to orange marks under the jaw.

Size: Large fish up to 8 pounds.

Tackle: Flies, Spinners, Baits, Spoons and Plugs. (See TACKLE BOX).

Season: Year round with seasonal closures.

Kokanee (Land locked Sockeye Salmon):

Location: Some Cascade Lakes and eastern lakes of Oregon and Washington.

Appearance: Silver with small spots.

Size: Between 6 and 16 inches.

Season: May - October.

Western Bull Trout (Also called Dolly Varden, a cold water specie in decline):

Location: Some inland rivers, lakes. Some Cascade Lakes and streams. Some eastern streams of Oregon and Washington.

Appearance: Olive color with round red or orange spots.

Size: Large fish up to 12 pounds.

Tackle: Flies, Spinners, Baits, Spoons and Plugs. (See TACKLE BOX).

Season: Restricted fishing everywhere except a few lakes.

Mackinaw (A Lake Char that inhabits deep water and grows very large):

Location: A few cold water lakes of the Cascades in Oregon and Washington.

Appearance: Dark color with round red or orange spots.

Size: Large fish up to 125 pounds. Averages 15 - 20 pounds.

Season: May - October.

Eastern Brook Trout (Exotic specie from eastern USA/also called Speckled Trout):

Location: High Cascade Lakes and their tributaries in Oregon and Washington.

Appearance: Dark body with orange and red spots.

Size: Up to 8 pounds.

Tackle: Flies, Spinners, Baits, Spoons and Plugs. (See TACKLE BOX).

Season: May - October.

German Brown Trout (Exotic trout of European origin imported from eastern USA):

Location: High Cascade Lakes and their tributaries of Oregon and Washington.

Appearance: Brown color with orange and red spots.

Size: Large fish up to 32 pounds.

Season: May - October
