IMHO, strategy games test the mettle of adversaries at a deeper level than any other type of game. My favorite strategy game of all time is Chess. I learned how to play in sixth grade and did not play for many years. I taught a friend how to play Backgammon in 1983. We soon were playing every night. He found a Backgammon set at the local store that also had a Chess board in it. Remembering my love of the game, I also taught that game to my friend. He soon learned the game, until we were pretty equal in strength. We decided to join a local club. After a year at the club, Richard (my friend) had only won two games and drawn one, while I had won none! Humbled, but not ready to give up, we obtained permission from our local library to use their facilities to start a club of our own. I played with the Woodburn Chess Club for four years before moving away. It was a wonderful experience.
- I am currently not involved in any organized Chess.
- But give me a call. I am willing to join!
When Microprose came out with Master of Orion seven years ago, little did I know that I would still be playing the game today! I still use it to divert myself once in a while.
