Thanks but no thanks, gramps. This site leaves me speechless. Almost. Though I think I can gasp out "overweening ... pride ... hubris..." before lapsing into silence.

Thanks for finding the web site. I had read that they were calling themselves the World Council of Elders, or something like that, but there's some older hippy dippy outfit using that name.

It's fun to think of people who would be accepted into The Elders. Margaret Thatcher? No way. But Fidel Castro? If he "retired", I'm sure they would welcome him with open arms.

I also thought of people like Rigoberta Menchu and Arundhati Roy, but it turns out they're around my age. This is depressing.

The Elders can kiss my ass.

I just keep thinking about the recent scandal in The Villages, a tony retirement community up the road from where I live (near Orlando, Florida), when it was revealed that various venereal diseases were on the rise in said community because of all the naughty shenanigans among the residents.

...but then again, these people just make me want to toss. "...build on the cumulative moral authority of their parents and grandparents..."? Shudder. Sort of a U.N. meets Aqua Teen Hunger Force, I guess.

Our reason for the trip is in furtherance of one of the most intriguing possibilities in recent memory.

Hmmm...the existence of time before the Big Bang?

The eradication of aging?

Female-female reproduction?

Artificial intelligence?

Extraterrestrial life?

How many "intriguing possibilities" guesses do you suppose it would take me to get to, "The descendants of some famous people gather in a gassy confab to pathetically bathe in their ancestors' (sometimes dubious) reflected glory"?

But....the presence of Saint Jimmy makes it all good. Doesn't it?
