Groggy But Sentient First , I have a confession to make. The alarm is set to wake me up to NPR every morning. This is not strictly the doing of My Spouse the Democrat. I acquiesce in this choice because "but first the nyews" is the least jarring sound available on the radio dial at 6 am.

I did prepare for groaning, however, when Morning Edition presented Algore, and the desire for five more minutes of lounging overcame the impulse to start up and turn the damned thing off. Yes, the Donks still need to ditch the gorebot, but as I listened I must admit I had a faint stirring of hope that perhaps they might be able to scrape together an intelligent opposition. Within creepy Al's formless sloganizing were indications that a feeble understanding of what actually matters to Americans was coming together in some Democrat's head somewhere. This is hopeful. The Republicans need an intelligent opposition. The Gorebot touched on Poindexter and the Ministry of Love, which the Democrats need to be all over like ugly on an ape. Not that I believe that the Democratic Party is consumed with concern for my privacy rights, but it is important that the administration be beaten severely about the head and neck with this issue, loud and long. The problem is that Gore projects opportunism more than conviction on the subject. The emphasis matters - Poindexter's tainted past is fair game, but the fundamental issue is the IAO itself.

No glimmer of coherence on the Iraq issue, though. The unelaborated "distraction from the war on terror" is among the weakest of the anti-war arguments, and evokes in this voter's mind the vision of another 50 years of disastrous "peace processing" in the Middle East. There's a blogger or two who might be able to help them improve the debate.

Blogcestuous update: Jonathan Gewirtz has some remarks and recommended reading on why conservatives shouldn't be gloating about Democrats sliding further to the left.

Spouse would merely like to point out that, despite your persistent misrepresentations, he is NOT a Democrat. He is a registered Independent who simply happens to vote for Democrats a lot. And who, until recently, was more creeped out by wacko Republicans than wacko Democrats.

Oh, suuuure buddy. Election after election, you contribute to the destruction of this great republic, but "I am not a Democrat". I'd call this the voter's registration version of "I did not have sex with that woman".

I've seen those fat packets addressed to you, with the return address of the DNC. Since you don't have a blog and can't get revenge by telling everybody what I get in the mail, I feel comfortable in publishing this scurrilous information about you.
