For your reading pleasure, though, the spouse sent along a link concerning "a failed bid for a Darwin award". Ouch!
We do have a snake in the house, the daughter's lovely amelanic corn snake, known in the trade as a "creamsicle": pale and dark orange markings instead of the standard coloring. We have always known, however, to avoid picking up snakes with rattles, when moseying about other parts of this country.
I was really curious to see what an orange snake looked like, so I did some googling. Wow! There's a whole smorgasbord of corn snake colors. Anyone else who's curious can take a look here:

Pretty!

Yeah, but did you "obtain an annual license for $100 and submit an application that demonstrates ... [you have] ... proper training and can meet certain standards of care"? Otherwise, Mr. Creamsicle must go.

Angie - thanks for the link - I missed that page. They have some bee-yootiful snakes. I hope they don't mind if I post some of their images.
Anna - we feed bunnies to our snake.
Just kidding.
Jonathan - yes, spiders are indubitably cool. Unlike snakes, they can settle into the household without supervision or the necessity of buying them food from the pet shop.
Carey - that's Miss Creamsicle to you.

Snakes are a great way to dispose of research rats..
We have three snakes ourselves - two red-tail boas (a BCI and a Surinam BCC, if you care) and an albino corn snake.
I was recently at a reptile breeders' conference, where people where purchasing young specimens of this breed without any idea what they were getting into. Almost as stupid as the rattlesnake kisser.
The reticulated python pictured above eats adult pigs and goats and is named "fluffy". Bunnies wouldn't cut it.

I've bought two snakes from this breeder and they are absolutely gorgeous. Healthy and hungry little buggers too.
Corn snakes are such good pets for kids. Your daughter is lucky to have a mom as tolerant as you - I sure didn't! :)
