APRICOT, Inc. stands for Arwood PRagmaticism Institute for COmmunication Therapy, Incorporated. Dr. Ellyn Lucas Arwood is the founder of APRICOT, Inc. The term pragmaticism means that the whole is greater than the parts....the underlying philosphy to APRICOT, Inc. The whole child, the whole assessment, the whole learning process and so forth. As an Institute, APRICOT, Inc. provides materials, products, and educational services.
Dr. Ellyn Lucas Arwood has 37 years of clinical experience with a variety of special needs populations in a variety of settings including hospitals, alternate school settings, regular class settings, and clinics. Her specialization is in language which she defines as a set of concepts used to organize a child's or adult's thoughts, behavior, and ability to learn new knowledge. As author of three textbooks in language and numerous materials, Dr. Arwood has provided training, education, and consultation to numerous organizations and agencies. Recent research by Dr. Arwood is in the differentiation between using language that is mentally auditory or visual. Therefore, Dr. Arwood and her colleagues have developed numerous ways to use "language based learning" products and materials to assist children and adults in academic, social and behavioral ways.
Dr. Arwood uses a variety of visual methods based on the analysis of visual languages and visual thinking for teaching better forms of English literacy, including the use of oral, written, and read language. She has coined the term "Viconic Language" to refer to the use of visual language properties applied to English. Viconic Language methods may be used for improving behavior, academics, and social development. Viconic Language is based on 20 years of research related to the linguistic gap between how the U.S. population thinks in visual images compared to how English functions as an auditory language. An example of a Viconic Language strategy is oral cartooning or "Mabel mini-lectures." Both of these methods may be found in the publication by Arwood and Kaulitz cited below.
