Actiontec GT-701wg Bridged Configuration

These configuration instructions assume the Actiontec GT-701wg modem has already been configured for SpiritOne DSL. If not, use these instructions to configure the modem first. Note: The modem cannot serve both as a transparent bridge and a wireless gateway.

  1. Your computer should be configured to obtain an IP address automatically from the Actiontec modem. If you are using a Macintosh, select to Configure Using: DHCP Server
  2. Open a web browser and enter 192.168.0.1 in the Address Bar. You should see the following screen:
  3. Click on Setup / Configuration
  4. Now you should see the Setup / Configuration screen.
  5. We're going to skip the Basic Setup, so just click on Advanced Setup on the left.
  6. There really isn't anything to do on this page except to click on Begin Advanced Setup
  7. Select Wireless Settings from the menu on the left.
  8. Where you see Wireless, select On.
  9. In the ESSID box, type the name of your wireless network. By default, this will read "ACTIONTEC". You can change the ESSID to anything you want, as long as it is a combination of letters and numbers. Use all capital letters for the ESSID.
  10. You can change the channel being used by the modem using the Channel box. You probably won't need to do so, but if other wireless devices, such as cordless phones, or even other nearby wireless networks, are interfering with your connection, here's where you change it.
  11. At this point, we're diverging from the screen shot above. In the row of circles next to the word Security, select WEP.
  12. Click Next
  13. On the next page, leave the Authentication Type drop-down menu on Open
  14. In the Key 1 box, enter a WEP Key with no spaces. For a 64-bit WEP key, the Key will consist of 5 hexadecimal pairs of letters and numbers (numerals 0 - 9, and letters A through F are valid). To generate a random WEP Key, use this online key generator. Write the key down! You will need it later.
  15. Hit Next.
  16. This should be the Wireless MAC Authentication page. Specifying the MAC address of every machine allowed to connect to your modem is one of the best ways to ensure your wireless network remains secure. If you know how to find the MAC Address (also known as the "Hardware Address") of your wireless devices, enter those in the Exceptions box and select Deny all clients. If you do not know how to find the MAC Addresses of all your wireless devices, or would rather have an open wireless network, leave the dot in Accept all clients.
  17. Now, click on Save and Restart in the lower left corner of the screen.
  18. Click on the big Save and Restart button.
  19. Once the Power light on the modem stops blinking, you're done. When your computer first associates wirelessly with the modem, you will be prompted to enter the WEP key generated earlier.

What are People Saying about SpiritOne?

"It's local, and whenever I've had a problem the techs have usually been able to help me on the first call. Some at very odd hours! I like that the billing is simple, no fuss. There are cheaper ISP services, but I'm not convinced I'd be much further ahead. The 10 hour/month dial-up plan works great and if I go over, it's just a few dollars."
