Subject: Operation Ivy

I was an Ensign on USS Fletcher, DDE 445. We were there with the other three destroyers in our division, Radford, Obannon, and Carpenter. We patrolled around the atoll for several months before the Mike shot. We also tracked a radar buoy to plot water currents. We refueled from a concrete barge in the lagoon. We used Japtan Island as a recreation island. The day of the shot, we were the last ship to leave the lagoon, following the Curtiss after the device was activated. We joined the other ships at sea when the shot detonated. We also were off shore when the B36 dropped the second device, and were able to observe that drop.
